Curtains

Our latest production, Curtains, the hit musical from Kander & Ebb (creators of “Cabaret”, “Chicago” and “Steel Pier”) debuted in Del Rio the first and second weeks of August, 2013.  A play within a play (a common theme in theatre), this story centers on a murder mystery on the stage of the off-Broadway show “Robbin’ Hood”.  With actors literally dying onstage, a police detective-come-amateur-actor must catch the killer.  In the process, he becomes enamored of one of the actresses, helps reunite the estranged writing team for the show, and rescues the play itself.  Terra and Robert hit the stage again, this time assuming for the first time roles as husband and wife, the characters of Georgia Hendricks and...

Greater Tuna

Greater Tuna

Monty Python was famous for their actors frequently playing a number of characters, many of them women.  With the show Greater Tuna, a similar formula, albeit very American, gives actors the chance to really push their characterization chops.  The more significant challenge here is that it is a two man show, with each playing 10 characters multiple times.  The quick changes are amazingly fast and almost seem to defy the laws of time.  The Upstagers tapped veteran actors Rob Wade and Ben Graf to pull off this show, which was enthusiastically received by Del Rio audiences.  Because the show takes place in the mythical town of Tuna, TX, audiences in Del Rio often remarked that they knew people like the characters growing up.  This seems to be a large part of the...

Grease!

It was 1997, the 20th anniversary of The Upstagers…and it was the Year From Hell.  In a typical season, The Upstagers would present a small musical in late winter/early spring, a large musical in summer, and three comedies the rest of the year.  However, in 1997 it was decided to be a bit more ambitious.  No less than three large musicals were on the schedule: Grease!, Oklahoma! and Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.  Rob was cast as Danny, Terra was cast as Rizzo, and fellow Music Magic member Kathryn McWilliams was cast as Sandy.  Rob also was tapped for producing the music and musical direction.  Grease! is one of those shows that most stage actors feel like they have to have on their resume’, so it as much work as this show was, it was...

Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical

Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical

In August of 2003 The Upstagers took on one of the most popular newer musicals to come out of Broadway….Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical.  Not only was this a huge undertaking from the costuming and musical aspects, it was a drama, which is something The Upstagers have rarely done.  They had never done a musical drama.  Rob and Terra were incredibly anxious to take this production on and, in this case, it meant quadruple duty for Rob, who not only had the title roles but also directed, produced the music and did the major set designing.  As roles go, playing the dual role of Jekyll and Hyde was a dream for Rob and the most challenging he’d had since the lead in Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.  For Terra, it was likewise a much-desired...
